Can ProDentim Reverse Cavities? Early Decay Versus a Real Cavity
Can ProDentim reverse cavities? No. A cavity is a hole in the tooth and is permanent, so a dentist has to fill it. Only the earlier stage, before a hole forms, can be reversed, and the best-backed tools are fluoride and good cleaning. No trial of ProDentim was found.

Can ProDentim reverse cavities?
No, ProDentim cannot reverse cavities. It is a dietary supplement, not a dental treatment, and we found no study of the tablet at all.
The sales page says tricalcium phosphate "Supports tooth health". That is a general line about an ingredient. It does not say the tablet repairs holes, and it gives no amount (ProDentim sales page).
A product that claimed to treat or reverse a disease would legally be a drug, even if sold as a supplement (FDA 101: Dietary Supplements).
What is the difference between early decay and a cavity?
Early decay is mineral loss in enamel with the surface still intact. A cavity is what remains when that loss has gone on until the surface breaks.
The decay process can be interrupted or reversed before a cavity forms (NIDCR, The Tooth Decay Process). After that, enamel does not repair itself, and a dentist has to fill the hole (NIDCR, Reverse tooth decay early).
Think of a white spot as the last easy moment to act. Once the surface collapses into a hole, no toothpaste, tablet or rinse can close it.
Only a dentist can tell which stage a tooth is in, by looking and, often, by taking an X-ray.
What does help reverse early decay?
Fluoride is the tool with the best backing. It prevents mineral loss from enamel, replaces lost minerals and lowers the ability of bacteria to make acid (NIDCR, Reverse tooth decay early).
Daily fluoride toothpaste is the base. Cochrane work found fluoride toothpastes reduce decay by about 24% on average compared with toothpaste without fluoride (Cochrane, fluoride toothpaste strengths). Your dentist can add fluoride treatments in the chair.
| Tool | Early decay | Cavity |
|---|---|---|
| Fluoride toothpaste, daily | Helps halt it | Does not close it |
| Dentist fluoride treatment | Can reverse it | Does not close it |
| Filling by a dentist | Not needed | Repairs the tooth |
| Oral probiotic tablet | No proof | No proof |
What do probiotic studies say about cavities?
They say the evidence is weak. A review of 50 trials found that probiotics did not meaningfully prevent caries (Gruner 2016, probiotics caries & perio).
Other reviews report that many trials show lower levels of the cavity-linked bacterium S. mutans, with some trials showing no effect, depending on strain and form (SR 2025, probiotics & caries prevention). Lower bacteria counts are not fewer cavities.
The L. paracasei strain in one tablet trial made no difference to cavity-linked bacteria (Chuang 2011, L. paracasei GMNL-33 null). That is one more reason the trial results cannot be carried over to a tablet with different strains.
Think about what you would need to see before believing a cavity claim: a trial of the finished product, in people like you, that counted real cavities over a year or more. We did not find one for any oral probiotic tablet, and the sales page cites none.
What should you do if you think you have a cavity?
See a dentist. Do not wait for it to hurt, because decay can reach deeper layers without pain at first.
Until the visit, keep brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth daily (ADA MouthHealthy, Brushing Your Teeth) (ADA MouthHealthy, Flossing). Cut back on sugary drinks and snacks between meals (ADA MouthHealthy, Sugary Drinks).
Keep taking prescribed medicine exactly as directed, and do not change any dental plan because of a supplement. See the oral probiotic evidence page for the full study list.
FAQ01
Cavity questions, short answers
Does tricalcium phosphate in ProDentim fill cavities?
No. Lab work on tricalcium phosphate looked at toothpaste on artificial enamel lesions, not at a swallowed chewable (Hamba 2020, fTCP toothpaste in vitro). The sales page prints no amount for it, and no source shows it fills a cavity.
Is a cavity ever reversed without a filling?
No. Reversal applies to early decay before a hole forms. A cavity is permanent damage that a dentist must repair (NIDCR, Reverse tooth decay early). If you see a hole or feel pain, book a visit.
Can lower mouth bacteria counts prove fewer cavities?
No. Counts of S. mutans are a stand-in, and reviews note they are not the same as new cavities (SR 2025, probiotics & caries prevention). Fewer cavities need years of follow-up.
Can children use probiotics to prevent cavities?
We found no source that tells parents to use a probiotic for cavities. Children's dentists focus on fluoride and brushing (Cochrane, fluoride toothpaste strengths). Ask a pediatric dentist about your child.
