How it works

How Does ProDentim Work? Live Probiotics for the Mouth

Quick answer

ProDentim works by adding live probiotic strains to your mouth and throat.

There they may sit alongside the bacteria already present. Small trials of other strains show mixed changes in gum and plaque scores.

For the names on the tub, see the three strains.

The idea01

How does ProDentim work?

ProDentim is meant to work by adding live probiotic strains to the mouth, where they may share space with the bacteria already living there. That is the brand's idea. It has not been shown for this tablet.

You chew one soft tablet slowly, says the sales page (ProDentim sales page). The strains pass through your mouth and then down.

Researchers do study this idea, but with other strains, forms and doses. Their results cannot be copied over to ProDentim.

The mouth02

What lives in your mouth, and why does it matter?

Your mouth holds many kinds of bacteria, called the oral microbiome (Oral microbiome review 2024 (PMC)). Plaque, a sticky film of them, can lead to tooth decay and gum disease (NIDCR, The Tooth Decay Process) (NIDCR, Gum Disease).

The five claims03

Where in the mouth is ProDentim supposed to act?

The label and sales page point at five places: teeth, gums, tongue and breath, the throat and the immune system.

Teeth

Label or sales pageMalic acid and tricalcium phosphate are the blend items tied to teeth.

What the evidence saysMalic acid is a fruit acid; a strawberry-and-baking-soda test did not whiten teeth, and acids can wear enamel. Tricalcium phosphate acts on the tooth surface in toothpaste; swallowed it is a calcium source. Fluoride, brushing and the dentist are what the ADA points to. (Kwon 2015, strawberry DIY whitening) (ADA MouthHealthy, Dietary Acids) (Hamba 2020, fTCP toothpaste in vitro) (CDC, Statement on Water Fluoridation)

Gums

Label or sales pageThe label front says 'Healthy Teeth and Gums'; the sales page says 'Supports the health of your gums'.

What the evidence saysReviews of probiotics for gum disease find small, mixed changes in gum and plaque scores, mostly with other strains and alongside a dentist's cleaning. No trial of this tablet was found. Bleeding gums need a dentist. (Benavides-Reyes 2025, probiotics & perio) (Schlagenhauf 2016, L. reuteri lozenges) (MedlinePlus, Gingivitis) (Liu 2025, L. reuteri oral health review)

Breath

Label or sales pageThe label front says 'Long Lasting Fresh Breath'; peppermint is in the blend.

What the evidence saysA review of probiotics for bad breath rested on only three small trials and found no change in measured sulfur gases. Bad breath often comes from the mouth itself, so a dentist can check the cause. (Yoo 2019, probiotics & halitosis) (MedlinePlus, Bad Breath)

Mouth bacteria

Label or sales pageThe sales page says it 'Supports the balance of mouth bacteria'.

What the evidence saysThe mouth holds a large, varied community of bacteria. Probiotic strains differ, and a strain that helps in one trial may not matter in another. Trials often count bacteria such as S. mutans rather than cavities. (Oral microbiome review 2024 (PMC)) (Lorodent lozenge RCT 2022, S. mutans) (Hill et al. 2014, ISAPP consensus)

Throat and sinuses

Label or sales pageThe label front says 'Ear, Nose and Throat Immune Health'.

What the evidence saysA Cochrane review found low-certainty evidence that some probiotics may reduce the number of upper respiratory infections. The BL-04 trial measured colds, not teeth. (Cochrane 2022, probiotics & URTI) (West 2014, B. lactis Bl-04 & URTI)

A drawing, not a scan of your mouth. Tap a label to see what the label or sales page says there and what the evidence shows.

The pattern is the same everywhere: small studies, mixed results, other strains. The ProDentim benefits page sets every claim against its evidence.

The strains04

Which strains does ProDentim name, and what do they do?

The sales page names Lactobacillus paracasei, Lactobacillus reuteri and B. lactis BL-04. Probiotic effects are strain-specific, and only BL-04 has a strain code here (Hill et al. 2014, ISAPP consensus).

Different L. reuteri strains were tested in small gingivitis and plaque trials, mostly as lozenges (Schlagenhauf 2016, L. reuteri lozenges) (Liu 2025, L. reuteri oral health review). L. paracasei has been looked at for bacteria linked to cavities (Chuang 2011, L. paracasei GMNL-33 null). BL-04 was studied for colds and immune markers, not for teeth (West 2014, B. lactis Bl-04 & URTI).

The page says "3.5 billion" for all three together and prints no split. Tap a bubble to see what is known.

The sales page says 3.5 billion for the three together and gives no split or strain codes except BL-04. The round bacteria pictures are brand images; none says which strain it shows (ProDentim sales page).

Evidence05

Is there proof that oral probiotics work?

There is some early evidence for some strains, and none for ProDentim. Reviews of gum disease trials found small gains, usually next to a dentist's cleaning (Benavides-Reyes 2025, probiotics & perio).

For bad breath, reviews call the evidence limited (Yoo 2019, probiotics & halitosis). The bars show each claim in general; the tablet scores zero.

The bars are this site's plain reading of the linked reviews, not a published score. Four pips would mean strong, consistent trials in people; none of these reaches that.

In practice06

What does using ProDentim look like day to day?

The sales page describes one step: slowly chew one tablet every morning. Everything else in your day stays the same.

  1. 01

    Read the tub first

The label front shows 30 soft tablets. The images supplied print no panel or directions, so read the panel and any warnings on your own tub before the first tablet.

  2. 02

    One tablet, chewed slowly

The sales page says to slowly chew a tablet every morning. It does not say how long to wait before eating, drinking or brushing, so keep it simple and steady.

  3. 03

    Keep the basics

Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth daily and see your dentist. The tablet sits on top of that routine, never in place of it.

  4. 04

    Check in before day 60

The guarantee runs 60 days. Around week six, decide with your dentist whether to keep going or ask for your money back.

The full routine is on the how to take ProDentim page.

Limits07

What can ProDentim not do?

ProDentim cannot replace brushing, flossing, fluoride or your dentist. No probiotic is a treatment for gum disease or cavities.

Brush twice daily with fluoride toothpaste (ADA MouthHealthy, Brushing Your Teeth), clean between teeth every day (ADA MouthHealthy, Flossing), visit your dentist, and take prescribed medicine exactly as directed.

FAQ08

How ProDentim works, answered

How does ProDentim work in the mouth?

The brand's idea is that live strains join the bacteria already in your mouth and may shift the balance. That is a theory. No study of the ProDentim tablet was found, so the effect on your teeth and gums is unproven.

Does ProDentim kill bad bacteria?

There is no evidence that it does. Probiotics are meant to add helpful microbes, not to kill others, and this tablet has no published trial. Brushing removes plaque (NIDCR, The Tooth Decay Process).

Do the probiotics in ProDentim reach your gums?

That has not been measured for this tablet. Studies of other strains, mostly in lozenges, looked at gum scores with mixed results (Schlagenhauf 2016, L. reuteri lozenges). Reach is unknown.

How is a mouth probiotic different from a gut probiotic?

A mouth probiotic is aimed at bacteria on teeth and gums, while a gut probiotic is aimed at digestion. The strain matters more than the target (Hill et al. 2014, ISAPP consensus).

Has the ProDentim tablet itself been tested in a trial?

No published trial of the finished tablet was found. The label says "Clinically Researched Formula For:", but names no study. Research on single strains is not a test of the whole product.

Is the 3.5 billion figure on ProDentim a lot?

The sales page gives 3.5 billion for all three strains together and no split per strain. No panel confirms it (Hill et al. 2014, ISAPP consensus).
