Brushing, Flossing and Your Dentist: The Routine Under Any Probiotic
Brush twice a day for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth once a day and see a dentist regularly. Those habits come from the ADA and come first. A probiotic such as ProDentim is, at most, an extra on top of them, and it replaces none of them.

Brushing01
How should you brush your teeth?
Brush twice a day for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste and a soft brush. The ADA gives this as the base of home care (ADA MouthHealthy, Brushing Your Teeth).
Use a pea-sized dab for adults. Angle the bristles toward the gum line and use short, gentle strokes. Hard scrubbing wears at gums and does not clean better.
Spit, but do not rinse with a lot of water straight away. That leaves a thin layer of fluoride on your teeth for longer (CDC, Statement on Water Fluoridation).
Two minutes feels long. Try the timer below, which splits the time across the four parts of the mouth.
- Upper left
- Upper right
- Lower right
- Lower left
The ADA says to brush twice a day for two minutes with fluoride toothpaste (ADA MouthHealthy, Brushing Your Teeth). Spend about 30 seconds on each quarter.
Flossing02
Do you really need to floss every day?
Yes. Cleaning between your teeth once a day reaches plaque that a brush cannot (ADA MouthHealthy, Flossing). A brush reaches the faces of teeth, not the narrow spaces between them.
Floss is one way. Interdental brushes, picks and water flossers are others. The best one is the one you will use every day, and your dentist can show you which fits your gaps.
Gums may bleed for the first days when you start. If bleeding does not settle after about a week, tell your dentist. Gingivitis is the usual cause, and it can be reversed (MedlinePlus, Gingivitis).
- Slide the floss gently; do not snap it down.
- Curve it around each tooth in a C shape.
- Use a clean section for each gap.
The dentist03
How often should you see a dentist?
Most people see a dentist at least once a year, and some are told twice. Your dentist sets the schedule from your own mouth.
A visit finds early decay and gum trouble before you feel pain. A cleaning removes hardened plaque that no brush can. Gum disease that has spread may need deeper care, and some cases need surgery (AAP, Surgical Procedures (gum graft)).
The CDC lists gum disease as common in adults and as a reason to keep regular visits (CDC, Gum Disease Fast Facts). NIDCR describes the stages from gingivitis to periodontitis (NIDCR, Gum Disease).
| When | What | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Twice a day | Brush two minutes with fluoride toothpaste | ADA (ADA MouthHealthy, Brushing Your Teeth) |
| Once a day | Clean between your teeth | ADA (ADA MouthHealthy, Flossing) |
| Through the day | Limit sipped sugar and acid drinks | (ADA MouthHealthy, Sugary Drinks) |
| At least yearly | Dental exam and cleaning, or as your dentist says | (CDC, Gum Disease Fast Facts) |
Products04
How do you pick a toothpaste and brush?
Pick a toothpaste with fluoride and look for the ADA Seal. The seal means the maker gave the ADA evidence of safety and effect for the claim made (ADA Seal of Acceptance) (ADA Seal listing, whitening toothpaste).
The seal is not on every good product, and a missing seal does not mean a bad one. It is one clue among others.
Tricalcium phosphate, one of the ProDentim blend items, also appears in some toothpastes (Hamba 2020, fTCP toothpaste in vitro). That does not tell you what it does in a tablet, and no amount is printed.
Change your brush every three months, or sooner if the bristles splay.
Tooth-whitening toothpastes and do-it-yourself whiteners are a separate matter. Some can wear enamel or irritate gums if overused, so check the claim and ask your dentist first (Kwon 2015, strawberry DIY whitening).
Acid in drinks and foods also affects enamel, so sipping soda or juice all day works against good brushing (ADA MouthHealthy, Dietary Acids) (Citric, malic, lactic acid & enamel).
Families05
Does the routine change for children and older adults?
Yes, in small ways. Children need a smear or pea-sized amount of toothpaste and an adult to help, and older adults may need a softer brush or a different grip.
Dry mouth is common with age and with many medicines, and it raises the risk of decay (NIDCR, Dry Mouth Q&A). A dentist can suggest products that suit a dry mouth.
Whatever your age, the pattern is the same: clean well, limit sipped sugar and see a dentist on the schedule they set for you.

Does a probiotic replace brushing or flossing?
No. No probiotic replaces brushing, flossing, fluoride or the dentist. Studies of oral probiotics added them on top of normal care, not in place of it (Benavides-Reyes 2025, probiotics & perio).
ProDentim's sales page says to slowly chew one tablet every morning (ProDentim sales page). It does not say whether to take it before or after brushing. Ask your dentist or pharmacist if timing matters to you.
The label front reads "Healthy Teeth and Gums" and "Long Lasting Fresh Breath". Those are the label's words, and the label does not say how they were measured.
Clean first. Fluoride and floss do the proven work. Add a supplement only if you want one, and tell your dentist about it.
Safety07
What should you tell your dentist about supplements?
Tell your dentist about every supplement you take, including probiotics. They need the full picture, along with your medicines, before any procedure.
Both NIH ODS and NCCIH say to talk to a clinician before a probiotic if antibiotics or a weak immune system apply to you (NIH ODS, Probiotics (HP)) (NCCIH, Probiotics: Usefulness & Safety). Keep taking prescribed medicine exactly as directed, and never change a dental treatment plan because of a supplement.
Stop and call if you notice swelling, a rash, signs of an allergic reaction or stomach upset that does not settle.
ProDentim08
Where does ProDentim fit in a daily routine?
ProDentim, a dietary supplement sold as 30 soft tablets, fits as a morning habit alongside the routine above. It adds no step that the routine can drop.
A tub of 30 lasts 30 days at one a day. The routine is on the how to take ProDentim page, and the evidence is in do oral probiotics work?

Brushing and flossing questions
Should you brush before or after taking ProDentim?
The sales page does not say, and the label images print no directions. Ask your dentist or pharmacist. Whatever order you choose, still brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and clean between your teeth daily.
Is an electric toothbrush better than a manual one?
Our sources give no ranking. What counts is two minutes, twice a day, with good technique and fluoride toothpaste. Your dentist can tell you whether an electric brush suits your hands and gums.
Is it bad to brush right after eating?
After acid food or drink, enamel is softer for a short time (ADA MouthHealthy, Dietary Acids). Many dentists suggest waiting before you brush. Rinsing with water first is a gentle option. Ask your dentist what they advise.
Does mouthwash replace flossing?
No. A rinse does not remove the plaque between teeth the way floss or a small brush does (ADA MouthHealthy, Flossing). Ask your dentist whether a rinse adds anything for you.
How do I know if my gums need a dentist?
Gums that bleed often, look red or swollen, pull back, or come with a bad taste or loose teeth need a visit (NIDCR, Gum Disease). Do not wait for pain, because gum disease can be quiet.
Is fluoride safe?
At the amounts in toothpaste, health bodies support it for strengthening teeth (CDC, Statement on Water Fluoridation) (ADA, Water fluoridation is effective). Young children need a small smear and supervision to avoid swallowing it. Your dentist can advise on your family's needs.
