Does ProDentim Help Gums and Plaque? Honest Limits of the Trials
Does ProDentim help gums? Nobody knows, because no trial of the tablet was found. Studies of other probiotic strains show small, mixed changes in gum and plaque scores, mostly as an add-on to dental care. Keep brushing, flossing and seeing your dentist.

Does ProDentim help gums and plaque?
We cannot say that it does. No published trial of the finished ProDentim tablet turned up, and the label images give no amount for any strain.
What we can do is read the research on the strains it names and on oral probiotics in general. That research is real but limited, and it was done with other products.
The label bullet "Healthy Teeth and Gums" is a general phrase. It is not a result, and a gum result needs a trial.
What do gum trials show?
Gum trials show small and uneven changes. A meta-analysis of 24 trials found that probiotics added to periodontal treatment improved plaque and bleeding, but results in gingivitis were not significant overall (Benavides-Reyes 2025, probiotics & perio).
A trial in 117 adults with induced gum inflammation tested two lozenges. The main bleeding measure matched placebo, and a secondary gum score recovered better with the probiotic (Volgenant 2022, L. paracasei lozenges).
A split-mouth trial in 30 people with periodontitis used L. reuteri lozenges beside scaling and root planing. Scores fell in every group, with the biggest drops when the lozenges were added to the cleaning (Vivekananda 2010, L. reuteri + SRP).
What do plaque trials show?
Plaque results are mixed, and some trials found nothing. A review of 50 trials saw benefits for gum bleeding and gum scores but no significant change in plaque index (Gruner 2016, probiotics caries & perio).
A trial of a lozenge in teenagers with braces found no difference from placebo in plaque scores or in mouth bacteria (Lorodent lozenge RCT 2022, S. mutans). Another small trial of S. salivarius M18 lozenges in children lowered cavity-linked bacteria over seven days (S. salivarius M18 lozenges, kids 2023).
The bars below set the ProDentim claims beside this kind of research. The tablet scores zero because it has no trial.

The bars are this site's plain reading of the linked reviews, not a published score. Four pips would mean strong, consistent trials in people; none of these reaches that.
What are the honest limits of these studies?
The limits are size, length, strain and form. Most trials were small, ran days to weeks and used lozenges or dairy, not a soft tablet.
| Limit | Why it matters for ProDentim |
|---|---|
| Other strains and forms | Trials used lozenges and other strains, not this soft tablet |
| Stand-in measures | Gum scores and bacteria counts are not tooth loss |
| Add-on design | Several trials added the probiotic to a dentist's cleaning |
| Small and short | Reviews flag small samples, short follow-up and bias |
None of these limits means probiotics are useless. They mean the claim has not been shown for this product, and honest labels should say so.
Probiotic effects are strain-specific, so a result for one product does not move to another (Liu 2025, L. reuteri oral health review). That is the main reason we do not borrow these results for ProDentim.
Ask yourself what you would count as a good result. Pink, calm gums that do not bleed when you brush are a sign worth sharing with your dentist. A tub that feels like it is working is not the same thing, because gums can change with better brushing alone.
What should you do about your gums and plaque?
Brush twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth daily and see your dentist regularly. Plaque that hardens into tartar can only be removed by a professional (NIDCR, Gum Disease).
Keep taking any prescribed medicine exactly as directed. If you are pregnant, take antibiotics or have a weak immune system, ask a clinician before you start any probiotic (NCCIH, Probiotics: Usefulness & Safety).
If you still want to try the tablet, read the ProDentim ingredients list first, and check the side effects page for who should take extra care.
FAQ01
Gum and plaque studies, short answers
Is plaque the same as tartar?
No. Plaque is a soft film of bacteria that you can brush away. If it stays, it hardens into tartar, which only a dentist or hygienist can remove (ADA MouthHealthy, Flossing). That is why a scheduled cleaning matters.
Did any trial test the three strains in ProDentim together?
We found none. The trials we read used other strains or single strains, such as L. reuteri lozenges (Schlagenhauf 2016, L. reuteri lozenges). B. lactis BL-04 appears in a respiratory illness study, not a gum study (West 2014, B. lactis Bl-04 & URTI).
Why do gum scores matter more than bacteria counts?
Gum scores measure the gums themselves, such as redness and bleeding, while bacteria counts are a stand-in. Reviews prefer clinical measures and call for longer trials (Benavides-Reyes 2025, probiotics & perio).
Can I stop my dentist's cleaning plan if I take a probiotic?
No. Never change a dentist's plan because of a supplement. The trials that helped gums used probiotics alongside cleaning (Vivekananda 2010, L. reuteri + SRP), so the cleaning is still the base.
