Does ProDentim Whiten Teeth? The Strawberry and Malic Acid Claim

Quick answer

Does ProDentim whiten teeth? There is no evidence that it does. The sales page ties malic acid from strawberry to tooth whiteness, but a lab study found strawberry whitening did little beyond surface debris. The ADA advises talking to a dentist before using any bleaching product.

Strawberries on the tubs are brand props. They do not show an amount, and they do not show whitening.

What does the sales page say about whiter teeth?

The sales page lists malic acid with the line "In strawberries helps maintain tooth whiteness". That wording is about keeping a color, not about making teeth lighter (ProDentim sales page).

The label front does not mention whitening at all. Its three bullets are "Healthy Teeth and Gums", "Long Lasting Fresh Breath" and "Ear, Nose and Throat Immune Health".

One of the bonus guides is titled "Hollywood White Teeth at Home". We did not read the contents, so we cannot say what it advises.

Does ProDentim whiten teeth?

No evidence says it does. We found no trial of the tablet on tooth color, and the sales page prints no amount of malic acid.

A probiotic tablet that you chew and swallow spends little time on the tooth surface. Whitening products work by being held against the enamel, as a strip, a gel or a paste.

If your goal is whiter teeth, treat ProDentim as unrelated to that goal. Its pitch is about oral bacteria and fresh breath, and the evidence there is limited too.

Teeth also look darker for reasons that have nothing to do with the surface, such as aging enamel or an old filling. A dentist can sort out which cause you have before you spend money on a fix, and can tell you whether whitening is even right for your teeth.

What did the strawberry whitening study find?

A lab study of 120 extracted molars compared home whitening ideas with standard methods. A strawberry and baking soda mix was the least effective and gave no real whitening beyond removing surface debris (Kwon 2015, strawberry DIY whitening).

Over-the-counter, dentist-dispensed and in-office whitening all whitened. A separate study by the same group reported the strawberry mix lowered enamel hardness by up to 10%.

Over-the-counter whiteningWhitened

The study used extracted teeth in a lab, not living mouths, and a strawberry paste, not a swallowed tablet.

Can malic acid hurt enamel?

It can in the lab. Malic acid eroded enamel at low pH and high concentration in an in-vitro study (Citric, malic, lactic acid & enamel).

That is a lab finding, not a result for a chewable tablet, and the tablet's malic acid amount is not printed. Acidic foods and drinks in general wear away enamel over time (ADA MouthHealthy, Dietary Acids).

So the acid in the blend is not a reason to expect whiter teeth, and it is not proven harmful at tablet amounts either. See the malic acid page for the full line.

What does the ADA say about whitening?

The ADA advises using a bleaching product only after talking with a dentist. Peroxide bleaching often causes temporary tooth sensitivity and gum irritation (ADA Seal listing, whitening toothpaste).

ADA-listed whitening toothpastes use polishing or chemical agents, not bleach, to lift surface stains. Their Seal is for cavity protection, not for whitening.

  • Ask your dentist what is causing the stains first.
  • Keep brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste (ADA MouthHealthy, Brushing Your Teeth).
  • Clean between your teeth daily and keep dental visits.
  • Keep taking prescribed medicine exactly as directed.

FAQ01

Whitening questions, short answers

Does the "Hollywood White Teeth at Home" bonus guide work?

We have not read its contents, so we cannot judge it. It is one of three digital bonus guides on the 6-bottle pack. Check any whitening tip with your dentist first, since some do-it-yourself ideas can harm enamel (Kwon 2015, strawberry DIY whitening).

Will rubbing strawberries on teeth whiten them?

No. In a lab study, a strawberry and baking soda mix was the least effective method and only removed surface debris (Kwon 2015, strawberry DIY whitening). It may also soften enamel, so we do not suggest it.

What actually causes teeth to look yellow or stained?

Common causes include coffee, tea, tobacco and plaque on the surface, and the cause decides the fix. A dentist can tell stain from deeper color changes (ADA Seal listing, whitening toothpaste). Ask before you buy a whitening product.

Is there an ADA-accepted probiotic for whitening?

We found no ADA Seal category for oral probiotics or dietary supplements (ADA Seal of Acceptance). The Seal on whitening toothpaste relates to safety and cavity protection, not to whitening.
