ProDentim 3.5 Billion Probiotics: What the Number Does and Does Not Tell You
ProDentim 3.5 billion probiotics is the total the sales page gives for its three strains together, with no split between them. It is a count of live bacteria, and a bigger count is not a better one. The page does not say if the figure holds at manufacture or at the end of shelf life.

What does 3.5 billion mean on a probiotic?
3.5 billion means 3,500,000,000 live bacteria, counted as colony-forming units, or CFU. A CFU is one live cell, or clump of cells, that can grow into a colony in a lab dish.
That sounds huge, and it is small for a probiotic. The mouth and gut hold trillions of bacteria. Probiotic labels often show counts in the billions, so the number alone does not show strength.
The sales page gives "3.5 billion" for the three strains together (ProDentim sales page). The label images print no unit, and so CFU is our assumption from how such counts are usually given.
Why does the lack of a per-strain split matter?
It matters because studies test strains at doses, and a total hides whether any strain reaches a studied dose. Three strains could share the number evenly, or one could dominate.
With an even split, each strain would get about 1.17 billion. That is our arithmetic, not a stated figure. Nothing printed says the split is even.
| Detail | Printed? |
|---|---|
| Total for three strains | Yes, on the sales page |
| Unit (CFU) | Not published |
| Amount for each strain | Not published |
| Count at end of shelf life | Not published |
The unit (CFU), the amount for each strain and whether it is counted at manufacture or at the end of shelf life. The ProDentim sales page gives none of the three.
What does count at end of shelf life mean?
It means the number of live cells still present on the last date the product is meant to be good. Bacteria die over time, so the count at the factory is higher than the count in your cabinet months later.
ISAPP says a count stated at time of manufacture is inadequate if you buy near the end of shelf life, because most strains lose viable cells, some faster than others (ISAPP, Decoding a Probiotic Label). A good label gives the minimum count at the end of shelf life.
The images show no best-by date, storage line or lot. Ask the seller's desk what the count is at expiry, and check your tub for a date.
Is a bigger probiotic count better?
No. The right count is the one that a trial of that exact strain used, and more cells do not make a stronger effect.
ISAPP defines probiotics as live microorganisms that give a benefit when given in adequate amounts (Hill et al. 2014, ISAPP consensus). The word adequate depends on the strain and the aim, so there is no single magic figure.
The oral trials we read used different strains, forms and doses, so no number on this tub can be set against them. Our ProDentim ingredients page lists what each line is, and the supplement facts page lists what is missing.
What can you ask the seller about the count?
You can ask four short questions, and a clear seller should answer each of them.
- Is the 3.5 billion in CFU?
- How much of it belongs to each strain?
- Is it the count at manufacture or at the end of shelf life?
- What is the best-by date on my lot?
Call the desk with your order ID. Whatever the answer, keep brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, clean between teeth daily and see your dentist regularly.
FAQ01
The 3.5 billion figure: quick answers
Is 3.5 billion CFU a high dose for a probiotic?
It is in the usual range for probiotic products, though the tub does not state a unit. A high count is not proof of benefit. The right dose is the one used in trials of the same strain.
Does each ProDentim strain get 3.5 billion?
Not as far as we can tell. The sales page gives one total for all three. If shared evenly, each would get about a third, but nothing printed says that.
Do probiotic counts fall while the tub sits at home?
They can. Most strains lose live cells over time, some faster than others. Store the tub as its label says, and look for a best-by date.
Why do billions of bacteria not make me sick?
Most are strains studied for safety in healthy adults. Rare infections have been reported in people with weak immunity, so ask a clinician first if that applies to you.
