Does a Supplement for Teeth Enamel Repair Damage? The Facts on Fluoride and Calcium
No supplement for teeth enamel can repair a cavity, because enamel destroyed by acid is permanent damage that a dentist fills. Fluoride can help early decay before a hole forms. Calcium is a nutrient, not an enamel repair kit, and ProDentim makes no such claim.

Can a supplement for teeth enamel repair damage?
No. Once acid has destroyed enamel and formed a cavity, the damage is permanent, and a dentist repairs it with a filling (NIDCR, Reverse tooth decay early).
Enamel is the hard outer layer of a tooth. Mouth bacteria feed on sugars and starches and make acid, and acid wears enamel away. A white spot is an early sign.
That chain explains why the advice is the same for everyone: cut the acid, add fluoride and clean well. A supplement does not change any link in it that we could find evidence for.
Before a hole forms, decay can be stopped or reversed. The tool is fluoride from toothpaste, water or a dentist's varnish, not a swallowed supplement.
What actually helps enamel?
Fluoride, less acid and sugar exposure, and regular dental visits are the actions with evidence behind them.
Fluoride keeps minerals in enamel, replaces lost ones and makes it harder for bacteria to produce acid. Fluoridated water reduces cavities by about 25% in children and adults, according to the ADA (ADA, Water fluoridation is effective).
| Item | Effect on enamel | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Fluoride toothpaste | Protects, and can help early decay | Brush twice a day |
| Fluoridated water | Cuts cavities by about 25% | Depends on your water |
| Dentist's fluoride varnish | Applied to early decay | Ask your dentist |
| Frequent sugar | Feeds acid-making bacteria | Limit snacks and sipping |
| Acidic drinks | Wear enamel away | Rinse with water after |
Does calcium rebuild enamel?
No source we read says that a calcium supplement rebuilds enamel. Calcium forms much of the structure of bones and teeth, but that is a nutrient fact, not a repair claim.
The NIH puts adult needs at 1,000 to 1,200 mg a day from food and supplements together (NIH ODS, Calcium (HP)). Most of the body's calcium is stored in bones and teeth.
Taking more than you need does not add extra enamel. If you worry about intake, a dietitian or doctor can check your diet. Do not add a calcium tablet because of a tooth problem alone.
ProDentim lists tricalcium phosphate in its blend, with no amount printed. The sales copy says "Supports tooth health". We read that as a general line about a mineral, not a result for the tablet. The mineral is covered on the tricalcium phosphate page.
Any test of calcium on enamel that we know of used toothpaste on the tooth surface. That is topical use, and it says little about a tablet you swallow.
Can an acid ingredient hurt enamel?
Yes, acids can, and ProDentim lists malic acid in its blend. Lab work found malic acid can erode enamel at low pH and high concentration (Citric, malic, lactic acid & enamel).
Those were lab findings, not results for a chewable tablet, and no amount is printed for the tablet. We cannot tell you how much is inside.
If you have sensitive teeth or enamel wear, tell your dentist what you chew. Keep brushing with fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth, and keep taking prescribed medicine as directed.
The malic acid page explains what the sales page says about this line and what it leaves out.
FAQ01
Enamel supplement questions
Is a white spot on a tooth a sign to take a supplement?
No. A white spot can be an early sign of decay, and the right step is a dental visit. A dentist can apply fluoride and advise you before it becomes a cavity.
Why do some products say they strengthen enamel?
Fluoride toothpastes carry that kind of claim because fluoride has research behind it. A swallowed supplement is a different case, and we found no source showing it strengthens enamel.
Does sipping acidic drinks matter if I take a supplement?
Yes. Acidic foods and drinks wear enamel regardless of any tablet. Sip less often, rinse with water afterward and ask your dentist about erosion if your teeth feel sensitive.
Can you feel enamel loss before it shows?
Often, yes, as sensitivity to cold, heat or sweets, though not always. Sensitivity is a reason to book a dental visit, not to buy a tablet. A dentist can see wear and decay that you cannot.
