Tricalcium Phosphate in ProDentim: What the Toothpaste Studies Do and Do Not Show
Tricalcium phosphate in ProDentim is a calcium salt, and the sales page pairs it with "Supports tooth health". The research most often cited is on toothpaste, where it touches the tooth. Swallowed, it is simply a source of calcium. No amount is printed, and no trial tested the tablet.

What is tricalcium phosphate in ProDentim?
Tricalcium phosphate in ProDentim is a mineral salt of calcium and phosphate, named third in the sales page blend of inulin, malic acid, tricalcium phosphate and peppermint (ProDentim sales page).
Food and supplement makers use it as a calcium source and as an anti-caking agent that keeps powders loose. Teeth and bones are made largely of calcium phosphate, so the name sounds fitting for a tooth product.
The sales page puts "Supports tooth health" beside it. The tub shows no panel and no amount, so we cannot tell how much calcium a tablet adds. Our page on tricalcium phosphate has the short profile.
What do the toothpaste studies on tricalcium phosphate show?
They show a lab effect on the tooth surface, not an effect from swallowing.
One often-cited lab study tested experimental toothpastes with a treated form of tricalcium phosphate, with and without fluoride, on cow enamel with artificial white-spot damage (Hamba 2020, fTCP toothpaste in vitro). The idea is that a toothpaste can deliver calcium right to the tooth next to fluoride.
That work was done in a dish, was largely linked to a toothpaste maker, and was about a coated, treated form held against enamel. A review of varnishes found the added benefit of this form not yet proven (Hamba 2020, fTCP toothpaste in vitro).
Putting it in a toothpaste and chewing a tablet are different events. A tablet is chewed, swallowed and gone in a minute or two, and the study did not test that.
What happens to swallowed tricalcium phosphate?
Swallowed tricalcium phosphate is digested like other calcium, and the body sends the calcium where it is needed.
The NIH says almost all the calcium in the body is stored in bones and teeth, and it gives daily intake guides: 1,000 to 1,200 mg for most adults (NIH ODS, Calcium (HP)). Calcium from food and supplements feeds that supply through the blood.
That is a general nutrition fact. It does not mean a given tablet places calcium on your enamel, and we found no study that says so. The honest summary sits in the table.

Does tricalcium phosphate in a tablet support tooth health?
There is no evidence that it does, so treat "Supports tooth health" as a general line about calcium, not a result.
Calcium is part of tooth structure, which is why the line sounds right. But a diet with enough calcium is not the same as a tablet that repairs enamel, and enamel that has been lost does not regrow from a supplement.
What the ADA does back is fluoride toothpaste and good cleaning (CDC, Statement on Water Fluoridation). Keep brushing twice a day, clean between your teeth daily, see your dentist regularly and keep taking prescribed medicine as directed.
What should you check before you buy?
Check three things: the panel, the amount and the claim.
- Whether your tub prints a Supplement Facts panel with a calcium line
- Whether the blend amount is printed, since the images show none
- Whether you already take a calcium supplement, in which case ask a pharmacist about the total
The label image page lists what is missing on the ProDentim supplement facts page.
FAQ01
Tricalcium phosphate questions
Is tricalcium phosphate the same as calcium carbonate?
No. Both are calcium salts, but they are different compounds with different calcium shares by weight. The sales page names tricalcium phosphate only and prints no amount, so we cannot say how much calcium a ProDentim tablet gives.
Does the fTCP toothpaste research apply to ProDentim?
No. That research used a treated form in toothpaste on lab enamel, and it was topical. ProDentim is a chewed and swallowed soft tablet. We found no trial that tested tricalcium phosphate in a tablet for tooth health.
Can a calcium tablet strengthen enamel?
No evidence says it can. Enamel has no living cells to rebuild it once lost, and calcium you swallow goes into the body's general supply. Fluoride and good cleaning are the tools dental groups point to, and your dentist can advise you.
