What Are Oral Probiotics? Lozenges, Tablets and Strains
Oral probiotics are live microorganisms taken for the mouth, usually as lozenges or chewable tablets. The word probiotic means live microbes given in adequate amounts to benefit the host. Effects depend on the strain, and no trial of the ProDentim tablet exists, so claims need care.

What are oral probiotics?
Oral probiotics are live microbes chosen to live in or pass through the mouth. They are sold as lozenges, chewable tablets, drops and sometimes in foods.
The ISAPP definition of a probiotic is live microorganisms that, given in adequate amounts, confer a health benefit (Hill et al. 2014, ISAPP consensus). Both parts count: the microbes must be alive, and there must be enough of them.
The word "oral" only says where they are aimed. A gut probiotic swallowed whole is a different product, even if some strain names overlap.
ProDentim describes itself on the label as "Advanced Oral Probiotics" in 30 soft tablets. Whether that wording holds up is the question the rest of this post sets out to answer.
Where do oral probiotic strains come from?
Most come from foods, from the human gut or from healthy mouths, and are then grown in a lab. Makers pick a named strain, grow it and dry it for a tablet.
A strain is a specific version of a species. Two strains of one species can behave differently, which is why probiotic experts stress that effects belong to a strain, not a whole group (Hill et al. 2014, ISAPP consensus).
The sales page names three strains for ProDentim: Lactobacillus paracasei, Lactobacillus reuteri and B. lactis BL-04 (ProDentim sales page). Only BL-04 carries a strain code, so the other two cannot be matched to a specific study.
Lactobacillus paracaseiProbiotic species (strain not named)Amount: not printed
Lactobacillus reuteriProbiotic species (strain not named)Amount: not printed
B. lactis BL-04Bifidobacterium animalis subsp. lactis, strain BL-04Amount: not printed
The sales page says 3.5 billion for the three together and gives no split or strain codes except BL-04. The round bacteria pictures are brand images; none says which strain it shows (ProDentim sales page).
How are oral probiotics taken: lozenges, tablets or something else?
Most studies used lozenges or chewable tablets, because slow dissolving keeps the microbes in the mouth longer. A swallowed capsule passes the mouth in seconds.
One small trial gave pregnant women L. reuteri lozenges and found lower gum and plaque scores than placebo (Schlagenhauf 2016, L. reuteri lozenges). It tested one product, one group and a short period.
| Form | Time in the mouth | Note |
|---|---|---|
| Lozenge | Several minutes | Used in many trials |
| Chewable tablet | Short, then swallowed | The ProDentim label says soft tablets |
| Capsule | Seconds | Aimed at the gut, not the mouth |
| Food or drink | Varies | Often dairy, amounts differ |
The sales page says to slowly chew one ProDentim tablet every morning. The label images print no directions, so read your own tub.
Do oral probiotics work, and what is safe?
The evidence is small and mixed. Some trials of some strains show changes in plaque or gum scores, but none of them tested the ProDentim tablet.
The right reading is cautious: other strains, other forms, short studies. Count and strain also matter, and a count stated at manufacture says little about a tub bought later (ISAPP, Decoding a Probiotic Label).
For healthy adults live probiotics seldom cause trouble, yet a few people can get a serious infection from them. If you are pregnant, nursing, very ill or on medicines that weaken immunity, ask a clinician first.
Keep brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste, clean between your teeth daily, see your dentist and keep taking prescribed medicine exactly as directed.
How can you judge an oral probiotic label?
Check the strain names, the amount per serving, the form and the directions. A good label gives all four.
- Full strain names with codes, not just a species.
- A count per serving, with a date or storage note.
- A Supplement Facts panel and a warning line.
The ProDentim images we hold show none of the last two. Our notes on the ProDentim ingredients go line by line, and how ProDentim works explains the idea without the sales language.
FAQ01
Oral probiotic questions
Are oral probiotics the same as yogurt cultures?
No. Yogurt cultures are chosen to ferment milk, while oral probiotics are chosen for the mouth. Some strain names overlap, but a food culture and a tablet are different products with different evidence.
How long do oral probiotic microbes stay in the mouth?
Our sources do not give a firm figure for this tablet. Studies of other products do not settle how long any effect lasts once use stops, so ask your dentist what a trial period should look like.
Can children use oral probiotic tablets?
Ask a pediatrician or dentist. The FDA warns against probiotics for preterm infants (FDA 2023, probiotics in preterm infants), and the ProDentim images print no age guidance for children.
